ASX announcement Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT) Establishes Foothold for Graphite Australia in the Highly Prospective Donnelly River Western Australia

    HIGHLIGHTS

Exploration Licence 70/4825, covering more than 79 square kilometres, has been granted
The potential for economically significant graphite mineralisation is high
The grant is important in light of LIT’s strategy of building a portfolio of quality graphite assets
Adds to graphite project suite covering Western Australia
    BACKGROUND

The Directors of Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT) are pleased to announce the grant to the Company of Exploration Licence 70/4825 in the Donnelly River area in Western Australia. This complements the recent grant of Exploration Licence 70/4824.

On 10 May 2016, LIT advised divestment of its graphite assets to Graphite Australia NL, currently a wholly owned subsidiary. LIT intends to extend a priority entitlement in the proposed float of Graphite Australia NL. This anticipated IPO is currently expected early next year.

Donnelly River Project (EL 70/4824, EL 70/4825 and ELA70/4823)

The Donnelly River Project is located in the far southwest of Western Australia, immediately to the north and northwest of the regional town of Manjimup. The Donnelly River area has a long history of small scale graphite mining dating back to 1904. Graphite was exploited from two locations at various times between 1904 and 1943. Donnelly River, originally known as Graphite Hill, from which most production has occurred, is within a 120m wide schist zone in meta-sedimentary gneisses. Exploration in the area during the 1980s yielded grades of up to 30%.

The Donnelly River Project overlies favorable host lithology being gneisses of predominantly sedimentary origin (Figure 1). Public domain geophysical surveys clearly show a number of conductive units within the project area which may represent graphitic horizons. These present “walk up” drill targets. First pass exploration will be aimed at assembling a digital dataset of all work carried out in the immediate area of the tenements. The ultimate aim would be to extend VTEM geophysical coverage to all three licence areas.

    Managing Director Adrian Griffin commented:

“Graphite Australia NL is well advanced in preparing its significant graphite portfolio for public listing. We are very cognizant of the fact that graphite is a dynamic industry and we need exceptional personnel to run the business. The recent appointment of Tom Revy to head Graphite Australia is a great advantage to Graphite Australia NL and will prove to be a great advantage for the shareholders of the parent company, Lithium Australia. Tom’s influence and experience in project development is shaping the way we look at graphite projects, as we assess opportunities to strengthen the asset base.”

      Saludos.

Lithium Australia exceeds quality production specifications for lithium carbonate
Operations at ANSTO have demonstrated the production of battery grade lithium carbonate.
Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT) has put the company's Sileach™ process in the hydrometallurgical limelight having exceeded quality specifications for the production of lithium carbonate.

Operations undertaken at ANSTO Minerals (a division of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) have demonstrated the production of battery grade lithium carbonate.

The lithium carbonate feed was produced by Lithium Australia’s Sileach™ pilot plant, processing ore from Lepidolite Hill in Western Australia.

The refinement of the lithium carbonate produced during piloting was undertaken using a bicarbonate – carbonate re-precipitation approach, widely adopted in the lithium chemicals industry.

The quality of the lithium carbonate meets or exceeds the specification of battery grade lithium carbonate produced by one of the world’s largest suppliers of lithium chemicals, FMC Lithium.

          Adrian Griffin, managing director, commented:

"We have demonstrated the ability to process complex lithium ores, without the requirement of the traditional and expensive roasting step.

"We anticipate generating similar ground-breaking results with the production of lithium carbonate from Pilbara Minerals’ Pilgangoora spodumene concentrates, later this month."

          Analysis

The production of high-quality carbonate demonstrates the ability to produce commercial products from a range of silicate materials, some of which are not commonly processed to produce lithium chemicals, due to limitations in existing processing routes.

This outstanding result is a significant prelude to continuous Sileach™ pilot plant operations on spodumene concentrates from Pilbara Minerals’ (ASX:PLS) Pilgangoora project.

More details are expected by the end of the month.

Shares in Lithium Australia last traded at $0.185, or about one-third higher than the start of 2017.

Lithium Australia prepares to drill Horseshoe Pegmatite Prospect

Published on: Jul 10, 2017 | by Trevor Hoey

Shares in Lithium Australia (ASX: LIT) surged more than 40% under record trading volumes on Friday after the company informed the market that it was ready to commence drilling at the Horseshoe Pegmatite Prospect. This is part of LIT’s Ravensthorpe lithium project which is situated 500 kilometres south-east of Perth.

It should be noted that share trading patterns should not be used as the basis for an investment as they may or may not be replicated. Those considering this stock should seek independent financial advice.

In terms of its location, it is arguably of more significance that it is only 18 kilometres from Galaxy Resources’ (ASX: GXY) Mt Cattlin lithium mine. It is possible that positive news also released by GXY last week provided additional momentum for LIT’s share price.

With an 800 metre by 800 metre flat lying footprint containing both lepidolite and spodumene, the Horseshoe Pegmatite shows strong geological similarities to mineralisation at Mt Cattlin.

After a weak share price performance in the first half of calendar year 2017, GXY started the year on a strong note with its share price increasing from $1.65 as at June 30 to close the week at $2.10 last Friday, representing an increase of 27%.

Again share trading performance should not be used as the basis for an investment as it does fluctuate and investors should approach any investment decision with caution.

GXY’s price increase made it the best performing ASX 200 stock for the first week of fiscal 2018, and interestingly there was a strong performance from another specialty metals play in emerging graphite producer, Syrah Resources (ASX: SYR) which delivered a week on week gain of 18%.

While GXY’s strong kick was possibly assisted by the absence of tax loss selling that occurred in June, there was also strong news on the operational front as recoveries of 61% from production of circa 14,000 dmt were achieved, well in excess of initial targets of between 50% and 55%.

This augurs well for a company such as LIT should the mineralisation at its Horseshoe Pegmatite be also deemed to offer robust percentage recoveries when converted to lithium concentrate.

The lithium mineralisation at LIT’s prospect is hosted by the Cocanarup swarm, and a recently excavated costean has revealed lithium mineralisation which includes spodumene, lepidolite and elbaite, all of which can be processed using the company’s proprietary Sileach process.

Poseidon Nickel has given Lithium Australia access to a major processing plant at Lake Johnston and accelerated its push into Lithium processing with Lithium Australia's breakthrough Sileach technology. Under an MOU signed this week, the companies will look to jointly explore their tenements and evaluate processing opportunities using technology belonging to both companies.

Lithium Australia’s battery cathode acquisition on analyst radar

                      Lara Smith | September 25, 2017 | No Comments

There are two things that cause the most dramatic price action on mining stocks: production and takeover. It’s in every investor’s best interest to go long a company prior to either of these events, and Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT), being mere months away from the completion of a large scale pilot plant (LSPP), have found themselves once again on my radar. The company look set to achieve producer status within the next year, and on a much grander scale than anticipated.

Recently, the company have undertaken a level of activity that generally precedes any kind of launch, but Lithium Australia’s storm of acquisition and agreement over the last month puts them within spitting distance of the company’s goal of producing commercial lithium chemicals at an operating cost in the lowest quartile, as well as potentially gaining access to a new sector, the manufacture of battery cathode materials, just in time for the projected spike in demand caused by the rise of electric vehicles and grid storage systems.

Lithium Australia have proposed to acquire a minimum 75% stake in Brisbane battery cathode developer Very Small Particle Company Ltd. The company has also signed a MoU with Poseidon Nickel Ltd. to evaluate joint exploration and lithium processing opportunities at Lake Johnston and Ravensthorpe in southern Western Australia. These recent additions to the company’s disruptive technological edge position Lithium Australia to gain a considerably larger market share than if they were to rely only on their innovative processing technology.

Lithium Australia’s 100% owned SiLeach technology allows them to extract metals from a range of silicate ores via a hydrometallurgical process. Conventionally, feedstock must undergo an extremely energy-intensive roasting process at temperatures of more than 1,000˚C; the SiLeach process, however, occurs rapidly at about 90˚C, providing a minimal plant footprint and driving down capital costs. The process has the potential to supersede the dominant method of extraction for a number of metals, reducing costs and mitigating environmental impact across the board.

A failure of current processing methods is that lithium is only ever recovered from spodumene concentrates, but lithium-containing micas, theretofore forgotten, can now be considered an economical source of the battery-essential metal. Furthermore, the SiLeach process allows for the recovery of lithium and cobalt from discarded batteries, creating access to a raw materials already extracted and refined. Should the VSPC deal complete, Lithium Australia would achieve strategic ‘fullcircle’ capability in terms of lithium extraction, processing and cathode production from unconventional source materials, and would be positioned as a market-leading recycler of discarded, end-of-use lithium-ion batteries.

Already, pilot-testing of SiLeach has resulted in the production of battery-grade lithium carbonate, and moreover, completed first-generation engineering studies for the LSPP show that it is capable of producing 2500 tonnes of lithium carbonate annually, as well as highlighting areas in which both capital and operating costs can be significantly improved, with subsequent studies planned to further improve performance.

Given the recent activity and the company’s promise to have the plant completed by year’s end, it looks as if 2018 is going to be a good one for Lithium Australia shareholders. The sheer number of options available to this company creates a robust investment, and their commitment to sustainability makes it all the more likely to succeed over the very long term; however, the time to buy, in my opinion, is now

With this technology, cathode material can be produced directly from lithium concentrates.

Direct production of cathode materials would remove two process steps
Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT) has completed its due diligence for the acquisition of advanced cathode material producer, the Very Small Particle Company (VSPC).

VSPC owns proprietary processes for the production of lithium ion battery cathode material, a comprehensive pilot plant, and an advanced laboratory and testing facilities.

The VSPC technology is adaptable to the production of a wide range of cathode materials.

Lithium Australia is investigating the production of cathode materials from hard-rock minerals using hydrometallurgical front-end processes including the SiLeach® and LMax® processes.

Completion of the transaction remains subject to regulatory approval, including shareholder approval.

                          How the VSPC technology works
The VSPC technology commences with cathode metals in a solution from which the cathode nanoparticles are precipitated.

The commencement of the process is compatible with the solutions produced during the processing of hard-rock minerals to recover lithium carbonate, or lithium hydroxide.

The direct production of cathode materials from such solutions potentially removes two process steps involved in the manufacture of cathode materials, resulting in a revolutionary process which capitalises on the value-add generated by progressing from lithium chemicals to cathode materials.

The VSPC technology provides a simple and cost-effective means of producing such materials within an environment of superior quality control.

Engineering studies on SiLeach® and LMax®
Lithium Australia is close to the completion of engineering studies on processing plants for both the 100% owned SiLeach® process and the LMax® process for which it has exclusive rights for in Western Australia.

It anticipates a commitment to construct such plants, nominally sized at an output of 2500 tonnes per annum lithium carbonate equivalent early in the new year.

The LSPP is currently in the final stages of design optimisation.
Lithium Australia is well-funded with $10 million in cash and equivalents

Lithium Australia NL (ASX:LIT) is seeking expressions of interest for product off-take agreements for the SiLeach® Large-Scale Pilot Plant (LSPP) program. The LSPP is designed to produce about 2,500 tonnes per annum of lithium carbonate equivalent suited for the rapidly expanding global lithium-ion battery market. It is anticipated that the pilot plant will initially produce lithium carbonate as the primary lithium chemical, with a longer-term option of nano-powders for application in direct production of Li-ion battery cathodes. The production of these high-value powders will use the Very Small Particle Company (VSPC) technology, which Lithium Australia is acquiring.READ NOW: Lithium Australia to acquire battery cathode company

Adrian Griffin, managing director, commented: "Global interest in the pilot plant has been significant."Development has now moved to the product offtake negotiations and structuring finance options – both with a completion objective of early in the New Year."The commercial opportunity for new battery-focused lithium technologies and products is now well enunciated and a pilot plant of this large-scale is the prelude to a full-scale production plant."How will the LSPP work

The LSPP will employ Lithium Australia's wholly-owned SiLeach® lithium processing technology which eliminates the expensive roasting step otherwise utilised in conventional lithium processing, and can treat all lithium silicates including micas and contaminated spodumene concentrates. These are currently being disposed of as waste from mining operations around the world.READ NOW: Lithium Australia attracts a Speculative Buy from Perth-broker

                                Lithium Australia confirms VSPC process

Lithium Australia has confirmed the Very Small Particle Company process was capable of producing quality lithium iron phosphate cathode material.

Lithium Australia (ASX: LIT) has confirmed the Very Small Particle Company process was capable of producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode material that is equivalent to or better than the LFP standard reference cathode material.
LFP is a safe cathode material that is used in lithium ion batteries for grid and off-grid energy storage (solar and wind power storage) and e-bus applications. The electrical energy storage sector is rapidly expanding, driven by the need to increase baseload capacity of networks which are being increasingly supplied from renewable sources.
The material was produced in 2012 at its pilot facility in Brisbane Australia and was recently tested for electrochemical properties by an independent laboratory in Germany (Custom Cells Itzehoe GmbH).
Testing was performed on coin cells manufactured from the VSPC LFP product and on a standard reference LFP material. The VSPC product performed well compared with the laboratory standard reference material, demonstrating good cycling stability, as well as higher potentials and higher discharge capacities compared to the standard reference material.
The company last week completed due diligence for the acquisition of advanced cathode material producer, VSPC. The acquisition provides LIT with proprietary processes for the production of lithium ion battery cathode material, a comprehensive pilot plant and advanced laboratory and testing facilities.
Applying the technology to the direct production of cathode materials would potentially remove two process steps involved in the manufacture of cathode materials, resulting in a process which would capitalise on the value add generated by progressing from lithium chemicals to cathode materials.

Shares in LIT have responded positively to these recent developments, increasing more than 50 percent in October to hit a 12 month high of 21.5 cents.
